A Heartfelt Tribute To Dr. Mike Nkem Egboh: A Life Dedicated To Service And Humanity

Few years ago, the world bade a final farewell to the beloved Dr. Mike Nkem Egboh. The loss resonates deeply within the hearts of all who knew him, particularly those from Ubulu-Uku and its neighbouring communities in Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State.
For decades, his name was synonymous with selflessness and generosity. To the students who walked the hallways of primary and secondary schools from the early 80s to the 2000s, Dr. Egboh was more than just a local figure; he was a symbol of hope, support, and inspiration.

His legacy in philanthropy is etched in the lives of countless students, as he went beyond the call of duty to make a lasting difference. Dr. Egboh wasn’t just a doctor; he was a father figure, mentor, and guide. His presence in almost every school in the area was felt in the most tangible way — through his scholarship programmes that uplifted the brightest minds, particularly those excelling in sports and academics. His belief in the potential of the youth was unwavering, and he made it his mission to ensure that many of them had the opportunities they deserved.

Dr. Egboh was born on March 12th to late Pa Hermas Egboh of Agbonta Udogwu and Mrs. Nwaka Egboh (Nee Okonji) of Dibia's family, Umu Ezenalia lineage, Isho Village, in Ubulu-Uku kingdom. He had a humble beginning, but even as a young boy, his determination and passion for learning shone brightly. He started his educational journey at St. John's Catholic School, Ilah, before moving on to other esteemed institutions like St. Paul’s Catholic School Issele-Uku, St. Charles’ Ubulu-Uku, and Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku, where he completed his secondary education.
His quest for knowledge was insatiable, and this commitment was reflected in the academic excellence he achieved, culminating in his graduation from Anglican Grammar School in 1967.

In a world where opportunities were often limited, Dr. Egboh’s resilience and perseverance saw him venture beyond the borders of Nigeria to further his studies.
In 1971, through a foreign scholarship awarded by the Bureau for External Aid, he embarked on a remarkable journey to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) to study medicine. He first attended Kharkov State University in Ukraine before moving to Kaline State Medicine Institute in Russia. It was during his time in Russia that he met and married his wife on August 24, 1977, a moment that marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and support. Their union is blessed with children who are making theory marks in various fields of endeavours.

Upon completing his medical studies, Dr. Egboh returned to Nigeria, where he began his medical career. He worked diligently as a House Officer at Central Hospital, Benin, and later served his National Youth Service at Bendel Ports Council, Benin City. His passion for healthcare led him to establish Twins Clinic in Warri in 1981, where he served as the Medical Director. His work as a dedicated medical professional and his commitment to serving the community left a lasting impact on everyone who walked through the doors of his clinic.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Egboh was known for his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his community. He was a man who truly believed that no one should be left behind, and his philanthropic efforts will continue to inspire generations to come. The profound impact he made on the lives of so many is a testament to his character, his devotion to humanity, and his love for his community.
